PSYLLIUM SEEDS
Psyllium husk is derived from the Psyllium seeds. The Psyllium husks are further ground to make Psyllium powder. In India, they are known as Isaphgula. They flavourless and are mainly used in the pharmaceutical industry as a component during manufacturing of many medicines. They are produced and used for their mucilage content. Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fiber to relieve symptoms of both constipation and mild diarrhea, and occasionally as a food thickener. Psyllium has been used as a thickener in ice cream and other frozen desserts.
Psyllium or ispaghula is the common name used for several members of the plant genus Plantago whose seeds are used commercially for the production of mucilage.
The soluble fiber found in psyllium husks can help lower cholesterol. Psyllium can help relieve both constipation and diarrhea, and is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and other intestinal problems.
